Lionardo Vigo, un pioniere dell'etnografia siciliana

2015

THE KNOT SCRIPT – THE LOST WRITING SYSTEM OF THE LATVIAN LANGUAGE

2016

The article analyses a writing system of the Latvian language that has been scarcely researched before. The evidence of the usage of the knot script and song clews is present in the Latvian folklore, although it has been commonly considered as a metaphor. At the beginning of the 20th century there were individuals still using it prior to the conventional literacy increase due to the general education. Similar knot scripts can be found in several cultures around the globe. The article encompasses a study of previous researches and evidence in periodicals, Latvian community in Lithuania, education of commoners in Latvia, reciprocal comparison of the Latvian knot script writing systems, interv…

Melodic and contextual similarity of folk song phrases

2007

Various models of melodic similarity have been proposed and assessed in perceptual experiments. Contour and pitch content variables haven been favoured although music-theoretical and statistical variables have also been claimed to explain similarity ratings. A Re-analysis of earlier work by Rosner & Meyer (1986) suggests that simple contextual features can also be highly explanatory with more complex stimuli. A new experiment containing short melodic phrases investigated the effectiveness of several global and comparative variables. A multi-dimensional scaling solution indicated that both melodic direction and pitch range are highly relevant for making such similarity judgments and tha…

Ekspansja tradycyjnej muzyki podhalańskiej na północ

2020

Folk and Popular as "National": The Invention of the Italian Unity through Poetry and Music

2013

2015

A penchant for folk music is recurrent in Giuseppe Tartini’s oeuvre. In particular, four movements from his violin sonatas are based on the well-known theme of the Arie del Tasso, which attracted the attention of Rousseau and Goethe during their stay in Venice. Central to his work as composer and theorist is the idea of closeness to nature ‒ far from the “bare” transcription of gondoliers’ songs in the way of a musicographer interested in ethnology. For Tartini, following the so-called “musica naturalis” of the ancient Greeks and the “music of the nations”, the term “popolare” is equivalent to simple, and simplicity is the main feature of nature. In his writings, the concept of nature frequ…

La canzone popolare italiana fra implicazioni diastratiche e riusi colti

2015

This paper studies the linguistic variability in Italian music songs from a sociola point of view, a new research approach with only few studis in the current bibliography. The social factors of linguistic variation will be called into question to discuss the meaning of "folk song", a rather complex notion. First of all, we shall remark that many recent studies on songs use the term 'opular' with a quite different meaning rather than the meaning used in Italian linguistics. The variationist approach allows us to define the meaning of "folk song", because it shoes the close relationship between linguistic features and the social world represented in folk songs. In this perspective, we shall …
